Irving Stoy Reed (Novem – Septem) [1] [2] was an American mathematician and engineer. He is best known for co-inventing a class of algebraic error-correcting and error-detecting codes known as Reed–Solomon codes in collaboration with Gustave Solomon.
On Sept. 11, 2012, Emeritus Professor Irving S. Reed of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering passed away at the age of 88. Reed was a professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering from 1963 until his retirement in 1993 as Powell Chair of Engineering Emeritus.
Gustave Solomon, a mathematician whose work was important in the world of digital information, died on Jan. 31 at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. From 1951 to 1960 he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he developed computer programming languages, the theory and analysis of radar systems—with applications to missile defense—and the Reed-Muller and Reed-Solomon codes for protecting the integrity of digital information.
